Several events have been held in memory of Liam and Solon this spring. All have been heartfelt occasions for remembering and celebrating their lives and we greatly appreciate each event and the thought, planning and effort that created each of them.
Solon's Barre Town Middle and Elementary School (BTMES) grade 7 classmates on May 13 held a variety show as a memorial to the boys and as a fun fundraiser for the instrument loaning library. The show featured students and professional musicians including several past band directors at the school.
This students organized the show as part of their PSTL (Problem Solving Through Literature) class. A violin case at the door collected over $1,500 by the end of the evening. The BTMES band instrument library loans instruments to students unable to afford a rental.
Former classmates of Solon and Liam at The Elizabeth Ann Clune Montessori School in Ithaca, New York raised money and built a hexagonal bench around a maple tree they planted, both in memory of Solon and Liam. A small dedication ceremony including teachers and others at the school, close friends and family was held at the school May 9.
The lawn in front of the Barre Town Middle and Elementary School received a new sugar maple tree on Green Up Day. A granite marker stone made and donated by relative of organizer Danette Gagne states that the tree was planted in the memory of Solon and Liam. Barre Boy Scout Troop 714, friends and families attended.
The Green Mountain Youth Symphony Concert Orchestra dedicated their April 11 performance of "Ashokan Farewell" to the memory of Liam and Solon. Liam played percussion with the Orchestra in 2009.
The Capital Soccer web site now shows the "Liam" patches the club has distributed to all players for wearing on the side of their shorts this year, to remember the passion and intensity Liam had for soccer. It also shows a copy of an article about Liam that appeared in the Vermont Soccer Association Newsletter.
The Vermont Piano Teachers' Association dedicated the March, 2010 Spring Festival of Recitals to Solon's memory. Solon played at this event in 2009.
Boy Scout Pack 714 awarded Solon the "Spirit of the Eagle."
Alison Cheroff, Solon's piano teacher, dedicated the Spring recital she held with her students to the memory of Solon and Liam. She played several of the pieces Solon was playing, including his composition called Transitions.
